A number of women took part in the protest, which was held at Tali Morh, New Plot Jammu. They were expressing resentment against alleged Police failure to control the increasing incident of snatching purse, chain, mobile etc from females walking alone on roads, in lanes and even near their houses.
They raised slogans for protection of women from such criminal elements and demanded an overhauling in the Police Department, particularly at the level of Station House Officers (SHOs) and Police Post Incharge.
While addressing the protesters, Rajinder Sharma said it was a matter of great concern for the society and administration that snatching incidents are increasing while Police have failed to apprehend the criminals.
“Only yesterday, a lady was critically injured dragged for fifty meters on main road at New Plots in the morning while attempt to resist the criminal who were snatching her purse. She has been admitted in ICU at GMC Hospital Jammu,” he informed, adding that such incidents have endangered life and property of public in general and women in particular.
The former Mayor said that keeping in view of the situation, Police and Revenue departments are duty bond to protect life and property of public. “We have such a long hierarchy in police from Contable to Selection Grade Constable – Head Constable – ASI – SI – Inspector – DSP – SSP – DIG – IG – ADGP – DGP and then Commissioner Secretary Home, but these alarming incidents of snatching depict inefficiency of the entire system,” he said and alleged that a handful of blue eyed Police officers are interchanged as SHOs , as if only they are efficient to run a Thana while rest all are incompetent.
Moreover, he added, posting of same SHOs and their long stays have developed nexus with criminals. “It is just impossible for a criminal to survive if not patronized by SHO,” he said and appealed Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to ensure transfer of SHOs and Patwari within three months if they fail to perform.
The former Mayor also suggested that at least one local Constable should be posted at each Thana to develop inputs.
