Jayesh demands Statehood restoration

JAMMU, Oct 26: Political activist, Jayesh Gupta has submitted a detailed memorandum to the Union Home Ministry in New Delhi demanding restoration of Statehood to J&K.
Gupta said that prolonged delay for Statehood has created dissatisfaction among the people and weakened their democratic representation.
He reminded the government that before the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, J&K enjoyed the status of a full-fledged State but after August 5, 2019, the region was converted into a Union Territory as a temporary step to strengthen governance and ensure security.
He pointed out that the Union Home Minister had assured Parliament that Statehood would be restored to J&K once normalcy returns.
“More than five years have passed since that assurance, and peace and stability have significantly improved across J&K,” Gupta stated adding: “People are eagerly waiting for the government to fulfil its commitment.”
He further said that J&K is the only region in the country to be downgraded from a State to Union Territory.
