RAJOURI, Nov 10: Residents of the Darhal area in Rajouri on Monday staged a strong protest demanding immediate repair of the road leading to the bus stand in the main market.
The protest, led by local BJP leader Murtaza Malik, drew attention to the poor condition of the road, which has become nearly impassable due to accumulated water and potholes.
The protesters complained that leaking water supply pipes and the absence of a proper drainage system have caused continuous water-logging in the area. The stagnant water not only obstructs the movement of vehicles and pedestrians but also poses a serious health risk by becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes, potentially leading to diseases like dengue and malaria.
Despite several representations and appeals made to the concerned departments, no concrete action was taken, forcing the residents to take to the streets. The protesters also demanded an enquiry into how the funds for this road were diverted to another project under BEAMS, terming it as a gross negligence of public interest.
BJP leader Murtaza Malik warned that if the PWD Department fails to take up the road work immediately, the agitation will be intensified on a larger scale.
Upon receiving information, senior BJP leader and DDC Darhal Mohd Iqbal Malik, Tehsildar Darhal, and SHO reached the spot and interacted with the protesters. They assured the public that the issue would be taken up with the concerned authorities and that the road work will commence within a few days.
