Pune airport makes it to ‘top 20’ in India; Secures 19th in international passenger traffic in the country

PUNE, Dec 1 : Another feather in the cap of Pune, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, was recently added when Pune Airport made it to the ‘top 20’ by securing the 19th position in the country in terms of handling international passenger traffic.  Situated at Lohegaon, Pune Airport is primarily a defence airport that shares the runway with the Indian Air Force and, therefore, has limitations in terms of expanding its operations. Despite the operational constraints and operating only two international flights to Dubai and Bangkok, Pune managed to secure the 19th position in the country.

The rating of various airports in the country was recently released by the Bureau of Immigrations.

The ranking has not only certified the benefits of massive upgrades being carried out at Pune Airport, but it also highlights Pune’s position as a growing city with more scope for international connectivity.

Commenting on the development, Minister of state for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol said, “Under the leadership of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the aviation sector has witnessed unprecedented growth. The central government has been focusing on adding new airports in the span of the last 11 years but various existing airports have also undergone massive upgrades. Pune International Airport is a fine example of it. Over the last few years, the facilities at the Pune airport have been upgraded to meet the expectations of international tourists.”

Pune is already a known IT hub attracting a large workforce, but it is also being considered the automobile hub of the country, with international brands of automobile firms carrying out their operations from Chakan MIDC.

According to aviation experts, the existing airport terminal was upgraded, which has helped in catering to passengers in a much better manner. With facilities like Aeromall and extended terminal buildings, passengers have been experiencing largely hassle-free travel.
