SRINAGAR, Dec 3: At least five residential houses were gutted after a massive fire broke out this afternoon in the Khayam area of Srinagar.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze erupted at around 1:46 pm from one of the houses and quickly spread to adjoining structures in the densely populated neighbourhood. “We were having lunch in the kitchen when the fire erupted from the nearby house, and within a few minutes four to five houses were on fire,” a resident said.
Another affected homeowner said the blaze reduced their home to ashes. “Our shelter has been taken away. We are very poor, and we have nothing left. All our belongings were destroyed. All three floors were completely gutted,” a victim said.
The Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) rushed multiple fire tenders to the spot after receiving a distress call at 1:46pm. Vehicles were dispatched from the Fire Headquarters at Babdem, along with units from the Gowkadal and Rainawari stations, at 1:47pm. Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading further, but not before five houses were destroyed.
Officials said the cause of the fire is yet to be established. Further details are expected once the cooling operation concludes.
