JAMMU, Dec 18: Dr Nikhil Mahajan, along with his dedicated medical team, successfully performed a rare implantation of a Leadless Pacemaker – AVEIR on a 29-year-old patient at KD Hospital, Marble Market, Jammu.
The young patient was admitted with severe infection on both sides of the chest following a conventional pacemaker implantation done at another medical centre. Owing to the complications and infection, the patient had lost all hope of recovery. However, following the successful AVEIR implantation at KD Hospital, the patient has fully recovered.
Explaining the procedure, Dr Nikhil Mahajan said, “AVEIR is the world’s smallest pacemaker. Unlike conventional pacemakers that are implanted in the chest with leads running to the heart, AVEIR is a leadless pacemaker that is implanted directly into the heart through a vein in the leg. The procedure requires no chest incision, leaves no visible scar or bump, and significantly reduces the risk of infection.”
He further added, “AVEIR eliminates complications associated with chest incisions and lead wires. It is 93% smaller than conventional pacemakers, about the size of a large vitamin capsule, and has an impressive battery life of up to 18 years, making it particularly suitable for younger patients.”
With an aging population and an increasing number of patients requiring pacemakers, cardiac pacing technology has seen rapid advancements since its inception in the 1950s. Despite these developments, complications related to conventional pacemakers remain a concern. For most patients, the AVEIR design translates into fewer medical complications, including reduced risk of infections, bleeding, and lead failure, along with shorter hospital stay and minimal post-procedure restrictions.
While briefing about the world-class facilities at KD Hospital, CEO Dr Sumit Sharma said, “This is one of the rarest and most advanced cardiac procedures, and the AVEIR device is truly revolutionary. KD Hospital, with its world-class infrastructure, highly qualified doctors, and dedicated paramedical staff, is fully equipped to provide advanced cardiac care.”
