The meeting was chaired by PCC working president Raman Bhalla and attended by I/c HQ Ved Mahajan, Vijay Sharma, Sanjeev Panda, Neeraj Gupta, Kapil Singh, Rajvir Singh, Michael Wazir, Rakesh Sharma, Rajiv Saraf, Rajesh Sharma, Baldev Singh Wazir, Sohit Sharma, Vinay Sharma, Praveen Singh, Janak Raj Mehra (Prabhu), Manmohan Sharma, Mansukh Bali, Sumit Sharma and others.
Paying rich tributes, Raman Bhalla remembered Dr Manmohan Singh as a towering statesman and transformative leader who made immense contributions to India’s nation-building. He said Dr Singh reshaped the country’s economic path, expanded opportunities for millions and helped lift countless people out of poverty through inclusive and people-centric policies.
Bhalla recalled that born in 1932 in Gah, now in Pakistan, Dr Manmohan Singh rose from a modest academic background to become a globally respected economist. His decade-long tenure as Prime Minister was marked by sustained economic growth, effective handling of the 2008 global financial crisis, strengthening of social safety nets and a major foreign policy breakthrough through the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal, which ended India’s nuclear isolation.
Highlighting his commitment to rights-based governance, Bhalla said landmark legislations such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, the Right to Information Act, the Right to Education Act and the National Food Security Act reflected Dr Singh’s emphasis on social justice, transparency and accountability.
Bhalla also said that Dr Manmohan Singh always paid special attention to the problems of J&K, adding that most major development projects existing in the region today were sanctioned and initiated during the UPA-I and UPA-II governments led by him. He recalled that in April 2008, the Dr Manmohan Singh-led government announced a comprehensive rehabilitation and development package for Kashmiri Pandits.
Echoing these views, Ved Mahajan and other speakers paid homage to Dr Manmohan Singh’s personal values, dignity and moral stature, recalling his long and distinguished public career.
