National Paediatric Surgery Day celebrated at SMGS Hospital

JAMMU, Dec 29: Department of Paediatric Surgery, SMGS Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, celebrated National Paediatric Surgery Day today, with an academic and awareness programme highlighting the importance of specialized surgical care for children.
On the occasion, speakers emphasized the need for paediatric patients requiring surgery to be treated exclusively by trained paediatric surgeons, given their specialized skills and expertise. Various talks were delivered focusing on improving surgical outcomes and comprehensive child centred care.
Dr Saalim Nazki, Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery, GMC Jammu, stressed that surgeries upon children should be performed only by paediatric surgeons, as they are specially trained to manage the unique anatomical and physiological needs of children. He further highlighted that successful outcomes in paediatric patients are the result of a coordinated team effort, involving surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff, and other allied professionals.
Nursing students also participated actively and highlighted the needs of paediatric patients and their attendants in the wards and the outpatient department (OPD), underlining the importance of compassionate and supportive care.
The programme was graced by Dr Dara Singh (Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital) as the chief guest and Dr Sanjeev Digra (HoD Pediatrics) as the guest of honour. Faculty members from various departments, including Paediatrics and Paediatric Anaesthesia, were also present.
