SRINAGAR, Jan 2: The authorities in Kokernag today imposed a complete ban on trekking, camping, hiking, and other similar outdoor activities in key high-altitude tourist areas, citing serious security concerns.
The prohibitory order, issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kokernag with immediate effect, covers Margan Top, Chauhar Nag, and Sinthan Top.
The decision follows inputs from police and security agencies highlighting recent incidents of individuals attempting to cross police checkpoints during late-night hours, posing potential threats to public safety.

Invoking powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the SDM stated that unrestricted movement and recreational activities in these forested and high-altitude areas are likely to adversely affect public safety and security.
As per the order, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Larnoo Police Station has been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the ban and regulate movement at all checkpoints in the affected areas.
The general public has been asked to strictly comply with the directions, with authorities warning that legal action will be initiated against violators.
The ban will remain in force for a period of two months from January 2, 2026, unless withdrawn or extended by the competent authority.
