GANDHINAGAR, Jan 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited German universities to set up campuses in India as part of a comprehensive roadmap for higher education collaboration between the two countries.
Addressing a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, PM Modi thanked the Chancellor for announcing visa-free transit for Indian citizens, calling it a step that would strengthen people-to-people ties.
“The roadmap on higher education we have developed today will give a new direction to our partnership. I invite German universities to open campuses in India and express my gratitude to Chancellor Merz for visa-free transit,” he said.
The leaders also discussed global and regional issues, including the situations in Ukraine and Gaza, emphasising a shared commitment to combating terrorism. PM Modi highlighted the need to reform global institutions, citing India and Germany’s joint efforts through the G4 group to reform the UN Security Council.
On climate and energy, PM Modi noted cooperation on projects in urban development, mobility, and climate action, including upcoming green hydrogen mega projects involving companies from both countries. “India and Germany are committed to developing a secure, trustworthy, and resilient supply chain,” he said.
On technology, defence, and security, PM Modi highlighted strengthened collaboration and thanked Chancellor Merz for simplifying processes related to defence trade. Both countries plan to develop a roadmap to enhance cooperation between their defence industries, enabling co-development and co-production.
Emphasising people-to-people ties, PM Modi recalled the historical connections between India and Germany, citing figures like Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, and Madam Bhikaji Cama as symbols of long-standing cultural and intellectual exchanges.
