Bhupinder Singh Raina is an established fiction writer in Punjabi with 10 novels, two dramas and an anthology to his credit besides one anthology in Hindi. His novels have been translated into Hindi as well. This novel in hand is a mini novel of its kind .
While reading, this mini novel raises many questions in mind of the reader but what I feel the purpose of writing this Novelet is to convey the moral and social values that are on decline in society . It was unassuming a few years ago that a girl proposes for physical contact to a man but now it is happening in society due to advancement , independence and exposure to social media.
Therefore the writer creates this situation and leads it to the disastrous end.Arshi the heroine faces separation from her husband when he comes to know about her adultery in relations. She gives birth to a son who commits suicide when he doesn’t know the name of his father . Although it is common in a country like America to accept the child with single parent but the writer wants to teach the modern generation to maintain the values otherwise life can be disastrous .
The story of this novelette develops in the background of Kashmir ,Punjab and America .Mr Raina has imparted a very valuable information regarding the history of Kashmir .The Heaven on the Earth became hell due to communalism that resulted in exodus of Kashmiri Pandits who originally belong to that land .The narrative is quite interesting and informative. These mythological and historical factors add value to this mini novel .
This novel starts with a letter from Arshi to her beloved whose son was born to her and she wanted to share her woes when he committed suicide because she couldn’t tell him his father’s name .The novel ends with the end of letter .
This novelette throws light on certain psychological factors .The marriage must be solemnized at proper age .The delay attracts the male or female to the opposite sex to satiate the desire of physical contact that can ruin the life .
In this age when Live in Relationship is preferred in youngsters to be free from the responsibilities of family the marriage institution is at stake , but this leads to frustration and desperation for the want of emotional security and sanctity. The author has very well depicted in this mini novel that the condition of woman is the same whether it is India or abroad. She has to prove her virginity when married.
Bhupinder Singh Raina has used very refined language in his novel even while describing physical contact. He has touched multiple aspects of life and being Jammu and Kashmir based himself, he has very well described the development for the unfortunate riots there .
This novel leaves a very relevant questions before the scholars and religious tycoons ,”If our country can be named after the son of virgin mother , why the woman who carries a child without marriage is not accepted in our society?”
However this mini novel is a document in itself making the younger generation to maintain moral , social and ethical values.I congratulate Mr Raina for this new successful experiment .
