JAMMU, Feb 3: Wildlife Division Jammu of the Department of Wildlife Protection, J&K, celebrated World Wetlands Day 2026 at the Gharana Wetland Conservation Reserve today in collaboration with the Central University of Jammu.
The event was organised on the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage” to underline the role of community wisdom and traditional practices in conserving wetlands.
World Wetlands Day is observed every year on February 2 to mark the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971 at Ramsar in Iran.
On the occasion, a special programme was held at Gharana Wetland near the Indo–Pak International Border in the RS Pura sector, which is an important habitat and stopover site for migratory birds, including the Bar-headed Goose.
Students and research scholars from the Central University of Jammu, led by Dr Vinita Sharma, held interactive sessions on wetland ecology, conservation practices and the importance of traditional knowledge in sustaining wetland ecosystems.
Debate and painting competitions were also organised for students from different institutions to create awareness about the conservation and scientific management of wetland biodiversity.
The programme concluded with the distribution of prizes and certificates to participants, followed by a collective pledge to protect wetlands and conserve biodiversity.
