JAMMU, Feb 3: NC MLA Showkat Ahmed Ganai while hailing LG’s address today said this Government which was voted to power by people worked tirelessly to come up to their expectations. “This Government opened doors for people under democratic setup as our ministers visit areas in length and breadth of UT to listen their problems”.
Participating on motion of thanks on LG’s address in UT Assembly today, he said right from 1975 after late Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah was released from Jail NC Government worked for development of J&K and welfare of its people. It always took people friendly decisions since then. He said both Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Dr Farooq Abdullah brought J&K out of difficult times and now Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah is also doing the same thing.
He said this Government took public friendly decisions in education and other departments while strongly demanding restoration of special status to J&K and Statehood. He took a dig at BJP saying those who got Medical College closed are demanding Law University in Jammu just to befool people. He rejected that the present turmoil was the outcome of 1987 elections as is being alleged.
CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam M Y Tarigami said there was no reference in LG ‘s address about restoration of Statehood. He said the CM has no powers under UT. “This Government has been disempowered. Despite public mandate we are powerless as this House too has been disempowered. This is a grave concern for all parties,” he added.
He urged the Chief Minister to convene a meeting to discuss for what we are being punished. He said climate change is taking place and suggested for a separate climate budget saying that there is no mention of the same in the LG’s address.
Tarigami said there is no strategy on youth and stressed that focus should have been laid on youth empowerment. He said J&K is listed among those states and UTs in the country whose record is weak in employment. Terming the reservations for socially deprived people a right step but cautioned that if meritorious students are ignored there can be unrest. He demanded a debate over the issue.
Tarigami, while highlighting the issue of flood hit people admitted that Jammu faced a lot of devastation in last year’s floods and cloud bursts but in Kashmir the apple orchardists also suffered a heavy loss and they too need to be compensated.
He, while pointing out towards officers gallery in Assembly said it is mostly empty. “Why officers will come to UT Assembly or visitors come to gallery when they have lost hope in us as we have been rendered powerless”, he added.
MLA Bani, Dr Rameshwar Singh while speaking in support of LG’s address said that his constituency which was hitherto neglected got justice in Omar Abdullah Government and termed the decision of his people a right step to support this Government. He regretted that there was no mention of restoration of Statehood in LG’s address and accused BJP of fragmenting the Maharaja’s State which was created after a lot of sacrifice by Dogra warriors.
He said Lohi School building which was in news for a long time and PM also made its mention in Maan Ki Baat construction of school building did not see light of the day. He gave credit to NC Government and Education Minister, Sakina Ittoo for constructing school and releasing funds for the same which he said will be inaugurated soon. He said besides this Government released Rs 47 crore for Schools in Bani. He was strongly countered by two BJP MLAs Vikram Randhawa and Yudhvir Sethi on his remarks that PM Narendra Modi does not know much about J&K as he is in Delhi. The BJP MLAs while countering him said PM knows much more about J&K than you.
