JAMMU, Feb 12: Demanding the establishment of National Law University (NLU) in Jammu Province, a large number of students today organized a massive protest at Rahya Morh and blocked the National Highway for more than two hours.
The situation escalated when two students were detained by the police during the protest and in an attempt to secure their release, several students gathered around police vehicles. Amidst the confusion and tension at the site, a police vehicle allegedly moved forward while students were in close proximity, resulting in some students sustaining minor injuries after being struck or pushed aside.
Following the incident, the protest intensified, and students continued the highway blockade until the detained students were released. The protesting students reiterated their demand that the Government should immediately consider establishing a National Law University in Jammu Province, emphasizing that the movement is aimed at securing educational rights and future opportunities for the youth.
More than 200 students took part in the protest, which was led by Saket Singh Rathore, Mukesh Manhas, Akash Bhagat, Garima, Ketan Kumar, Akshi Baloria, Atul Rajput, Abhay Rajput and Ahan Singh Jaral.
The protest commenced at 3:00 PM and concluded at approximately 5:30 PM. The student representatives appealed to the administration to adopt a humane and sensitive approach while dealing with the movements and to initiate constructive dialogue to resolve the issue peacefully.
They emphasized that students are seeking academic justice through democratic means and urged the authorities to address their concerns without confrontation.
The protesters stated that this movement represents only the beginning of a larger democratic struggle for educational equality, expressing hope that their voices will be heard in the appropriate forums, including the Assembly.
Meanwhile, members of the Reasi Bar Association today held a press conference in Reasi and unanimously demanded that the National Law University be set up in Reasi district.
The advocates argued that Reasi holds strategic and geographical importance and can cater not only to its own students but also to aspirants from neighbouring districts including Rajouri, Poonch, Udhampur, Ramban, and Jammu.
Senior advocates, including Vijay Kumar Sharma, Adv Rajinder Sharma, Adv M S Mir, Adv Rakesh, Adv Ajay Salalia, Adv Shailender and several others were present during the press conference. They collectively echoed the demand and highlighted that establishing the NLU in Reasi would promote legal education, generate employment opportunities, and contribute significantly to the overall development of the district and surrounding regions.
