33 Kashmiri students suspended at Mewar University

SRINAGAR, Feb 12: Thirty-three Kashmiri students have been suspended from Mewar University after protesting for three days over the institution’s failure to secure mandatory approvals for its BSc Nursing programme.
The students say the course lacks recognition from the Rajasthan Nursing Council (RNC) and the Indian Nursing Council (INC), putting the academic futures of more than 45 Kashmiri students at risk.
Despite repeated assurances from the university, including a written commitment from the Registrar two months ago promising swift resolution, no progress has been made.
The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association condemned the action as “punitive” and a violation of students’ rights. “Without statutory approvals, the validity of their degrees, professional registration, and future employment prospects remain uncertain,” Nasir Khuehami, the association’s national convenor, said.
“What should have been routine regulatory compliance has become a crisis for students who have invested time and money in the course.” he added.
Khuehami urged both Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to intervene, calling for either the immediate granting of approvals or the transfer of students to recognised institutions without academic loss. “These students cannot be left in limbo. Their future must be safeguarded,” he added.
The University defended its actions, saying the protests were “not justified.” The Registrar of the University, Dr Chandikaditya Kumawat said that a nine-member inspection committee had submitted its report to the Health Minister and NOC was in progress.
“There is a delay due to the ongoing parliament session. We have assured the students that the NOC will be issued and they will receive full degrees on time. Yet they remain adamant on seeing the NOC document,” he added.
