RAJOURI, Feb 13: Students of the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife Training (ANMT) School, Jawahar Nagar, Rajouri today staged a strong protest demonstration and temporarily blocked the Rajouri-Kalakote road, pressing for immediate redressal of their long-pending demands, particularly the provision of hostel facilities.
The protesting students, led by Nasreen Akhter, Nisha Rani and Javed Ahmed, assembled outside the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Rajouri and raised slogans highlighting the difficulties they are facing in pursuing their training.
The students alleged that despite being enrolled in a professional healthcare course, they are being deprived of basic facilities essential for academic growth. They stated that there is an acute shortage of desks in classrooms, insufficient teaching and non-teaching staff, unhygienic toilet conditions, and lack of clean drinking water within the campus.
A major issue raised during the protest was the non-availability of hostel accommodation. According to the students, a majority of them belong to far-flung areas and are compelled to stay in rented rooms under challenging conditions. They further alleged that the hostel building meant for ANMT students is currently occupied by health department staff, and demanded that it be vacated and handed over to them without further delay.
The students also met Chief Medical Officer Rajouri, Dr M L Rana, and submitted their grievances. The CMO assured them that their concerns would be taken seriously and necessary steps would be initiated to address the issues.
The protest was later called off after police officials intervened and assured the students that their demands would be forwarded to higher authorities for appropriate action. Traffic movement on the road was subsequently restored.
