SRINAGAR, Feb 15: The Government has outlined steps to provide structured career progression avenues for Casualty Medical Officers (CMOs) working in Government Medical Colleges across J&K.
Replying to a query in the Assembly regarding “Promotion of Medical Officer”, the Health and Medical Education Department said the Government is conscious of the need to create clear advancement pathways for CMOs.
The question sought to know “the steps being taken to provide career progression avenue for casualty medical officers; and” also raised a separate query on “The present status of establishment of Government Medical College, Kupwara.”
In its reply, the Government stated that eligible Casualty Medical Officers can pursue Post-Graduate and Super-Specialty courses through NEET/In-Service quota, enabling them to enter the teaching cadre upon completion of the requisite qualifications.
It further informed that Casualty Medical Officers are eligible to compete for regular posts of Medical Officers and Assistant Professors, as the case may be, in accordance with the notified Recruitment Rules and prescribed eligibility criteria.
The Government added that the experience gained by Casualty Medical Officers while working in tertiary care institutions such as GMC Handwara is taken into account, wherever admissible under rules, for future appointments and promotions.
Regarding the establishment of Government Medical College, Kupwara, the Department said construction of the 200-bedded teaching hospital is in progress and approximately 40 per cent of the civil work has been completed.
It also stated that the site selection for the new Medical College is under examination in the Department, adding that work at the previously identified site was halted due to flash floods in April 2024.
