Govt recommends doubling medical intern stipend

Excelsior Correspondent

Srinagar, Feb 17: The J&K Government today informed the Legislative Assembly that a committee has recommended enhancing the stipend for MBBS and BDS interns from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000 per month.
The information was provided by the Health and Medical Education Department in response to questions raised by MLAs Salman Sagar and Sunil Kumar Sharma regarding “Enhancement of stipend in favour of MBBS/BDS internees.”
The committee, according to the Government, was constituted under Government Order No. 538-JK(HME) of 2023 dated June 27, 2023.
Responding to the first query – whether it is a fact that the committee had recommended enhancement of stipend from Rs 12,300 to Rs 26,350 per month – the Government clarified that the committee, constituted under the chairmanship of Director Finance, H&ME, recommended enhancement of the existing stipend from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000 per month in favour of MBBS/BDS internees.
On the second query – whether the recommendation was examined and approved and subsequently forwarded to the Finance Department under File No. 26494 – the department replied in the affirmative.
It stated that the recommendations were examined in the department under e-Office Computer No. 26494 and submitted to the Finance Department for concurrence.
However, the Government said the Finance Department sought additional information and clarifications on multiple occasions.
These observations, the Government said, were communicated to the concerned colleges, which provided the required information from time to time.
The submissions were duly examined and forwarded again to the Finance Department, the Government added.
Replying to the third query – whether the Finance Department had earlier returned the proposal after clubbing it with issues related to postgraduate doctors’ stipend, and what steps were being taken to expedite the matter along with a timeline – the Government stated that the committee convened on June 24, 2024, in the Health and Medical Education Department to examine the proposal for enhancement of stipend to MBBS/BDS interns.
It was decided to simultaneously propose enhancement of stipend for students pursuing PG and DNB courses across all medical and dental colleges of the Union Territory of J&K, the Government said.
The department said it is actively considering the demand of MBBS/BDS internees and has submitted the proposal to the Finance Department for concurrence.
It added that once concurrence is granted by the Finance Department, a formal order will be issued for implementation of the revised stipend.
