Srinagar, Feb 19: Work has begun on Rs 59-Crore Parimpora–Shalteng flyover, a two-kilometre elevated corridor aimed at decongesting one of Srinagar’s busiest stretches along the Srinagar–Baramulla Highway.
Tatheer Manzoor, Superintending Engineer, Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, told Excelsior that the work has been allotted and construction is currently in progress.
“The two-kilometre stretch will start near the Ansari Toyota area, where the approaches begin. At Parimpora, there will be a vehicular underpass of around 900 metres, with the lower crossing remaining open for traffic,” he said.
He said the flyover will then continue along the same stretch, crossing Shalteng and descending near the Gurdwara area.
Manzoor further informed that the design will segregate through traffic from local movement to minimise congestion.
“Through traffic on the bypass will move over the flyover, while local traffic will continue to use the road below,” he said.
Notably, the four-lane flyover will run between Parimpora and Shalteng on the city’s bypass, a key artery connecting Srinagar with north Kashmir districts, including Baramulla, Bandipora, Budgam and Kupwara.
The project is expected to ease chronic traffic bottlenecks at the Parimpora and Shalteng junctions, particularly during peak hours.
The two junctions have long been major choke points, with commuters reporting severe traffic jams during morning and evening rush hours.
Irshad Ahmad, a local resident, said the congestion often caused serious inconvenience.
He said that people used to face immense difficulty due to traffic jams, especially during peak hours.
“If a patient had to be taken to JVC Hospital, they would get stuck in traffic. Once the flyover is completed, vehicles coming from Baramulla will be able to move directly over the flyover without disruption,” he said.
Meanwhile, authorities are also constructing a vehicular overpass at Muminabad Junction and a pedestrian bridge near the Children’s Hospital in Bemina to further streamline traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety along the bypass.
The flyover, once completed, is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease pressure on a corridor that carries heavy inter-district traffic daily.
