725 Kg Unlabelled Honey Seized In HMT’s Abanshah Area; DFCO Warns Strict Action Under FSS Act

Srinagar, Feb 20: In a major enforcement action against food safety violations, the Drug and Food Control Organisation (DFCO) on Friday seized nearly 725 kilograms of unlabelled honey from the Abanshah area of HMT, Srinagar, citing serious breaches of the Food Safety and Standards Act
An official said, Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Food Safety Enforcement Wing of the Drug and Food Control Organisation (DFCO) on Thursday conducted a targeted inspection in the Abanshah area of HMT and seized approximately 725 kilograms of honey found stored without mandatory statutory labelling.
Officials said the seized stock lacked essential details required under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, including product name, net quantity, date of packing/manufacturing, best before/expiry date, name and address of manufacturer or packer, FSSAI licence number, and storage instructions.
The entire stock was seized on the spot, and samples have been collected for analytical examination to ascertain quality and safety standards.
Issuing a strict warning, officials stated that sale or storage of unlabelled food products is illegal and poses serious health risks to consumers. Food Business Operators have been cautioned that violations will invite stringent legal action under the provisions of the FSS Act.
Consumers have been urged to report any suspicious or unlabelled food items by contacting the Food Safety Helpline at 104. Authorities reiterated that all packaged food items must carry complete information about the manufacturer, date of packing, and use-by date.
The seizure, officials said, reflects DFCO’s zero-tolerance approach towards unsafe and non-compliant food products in Kashmir’s markets. (KNC)
