JAMMU, Feb 23: Refugees from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) staged a strong protest demonstration, here today, raising slogans and reiterating their long-pending demands.
The protest was organised under the banner of the PoJK Refugee Front (1947-1965 & 1971 Camp and Non-Camp).
Carrying placards and a prominent banner highlighting their issues, the protesters assembled in large numbers and demanded justice for displaced families of 1947, 1965 and 1971. They alleged that successive Governments have failed to address their concerns despite repeated assurances.
They were demanding implementation of 30 percent reservation in jobs for PoJK refugees, reservation for their children, and issuance of OBC pattern benefits through the Refugee Board. They also called for proper recognition and inclusion of 1947, 1965 and 1971 refugees under a comprehensive policy framework.
The protesters further demanded allotment of plots and financial assistance to non-camp refugees of 1971 and resolution of issues related to proprietary rights and regularisation of land. They also sought constitutional safeguards and political representation to ensure their voice is heard in decision-making processes.
Leaders of the PoJK Refugee Front stated that thousands of displaced families have been living in difficult conditions for decades and are still deprived of basic rights and entitlements. They warned that if their genuine demands are not addressed at the earliest, the agitation would be intensified in the coming days.
The demonstration concluded peacefully with the protesters urging the administration to initiate immediate dialogue and take concrete steps towards fulfilling their demands.
