JAMMU, Mar 10: Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a significant response to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), with 97,260 applications received for rooftop solar installations in the Union Territory since the launch of the scheme in February 2024 and 25,160 systems installed as of March 5, 2026.
This was information was shared by Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in response to a question raised by Member of Parliament Sat Paul Sharma in Rajya Sabha today. The Minister further disclosed that Rs 182.21 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to beneficiaries in the Union Territory under the scheme.
According to the official data tabled in Parliament, the scheme gained rapid momentum during 2025. Between February 13 and December 31, 2024, a total of 7,097 applications were received, resulting in 560 installations and Rs 2.53 crore in subsidies released. In 2025, the number of applications surged to 76,146, leading to 17,939 installations and Rs 128.23 crore in financial assistance.
In the current year, from January 1 to March 5, 2026, the UT recorded 14,017 new applications and 6,661 installations, with Rs 51.45 crore disbursed to beneficiaries.
The Minister said to accelerate implementation and improve fund utilization, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has introduced several facilitative measures. These include a fully online process from application to subsidy disbursal directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts and collateral-free loans from nationalized banks at concessional interest rates linked to the repo rate for up to 10 years.
The Government has also simplified regulatory approvals by waiving the technical feasibility requirement in certain cases and allowing automatic load enhancement up to 10 kW. In addition, vendor registration procedures have been streamlined to ensure adequate availability of qualified installers.
The Minister said the programme is being regularly monitored in coordination with DISCOMs while regional review meetings are conducted periodically to track progress and resolve implementation issues.
He added that a dedicated grievance redressal mechanism and a multilingual call centre (15555) have also been established to assist consumers and address complaints related to the scheme.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to promote clean energy adoption and reduce electricity costs for households by encouraging rooftop solar installations across India.
