65-yr-old man arrested after firing on Farooq Abdullah at marriage function

Narrow escape as accused overpowered by security personnel; investigation underway

JAMMU: Panic gripped a marriage function in Jammu on Wednesday evening after a 65-year-old man allegedly opened fire when senior political leaders, including National Conference President and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, were leaving the venue at Greater Kailash area.

According to officials, the incident took place at Royal Park, where a private wedding ceremony was underway and several prominent guests had gathered. As the two leaders concluded their participation in the function and were exiting the venue, a gunshot was reportedly fired, creating alarm among those present.
Security personnel deployed for the protection of the dignitaries reacted swiftly and overpowered the accused before any further untoward incident could occur. The suspect was immediately taken into custody and later identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal (65) of Purani Mandi.
Sources said the prompt response of the security staff ensured that the situation was brought under control within moments, preventing any possible threat to the leaders or other guests attending the event. Both Farooq Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary were reported to be safe and unharmed.
Soon after the incident, senior police officials rushed to the spot and initiated preliminary inquiries. The area was secured and the accused was shifted for questioning. Police teams have begun a detailed investigation to determine the exact sequence of events, the weapon used in the firing, and the motive behind the act.
In a brief statement issued late Wednesday night, the Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed the development. “An incident of firing was reported at a function where JKNC President Farooq Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary were present. One person has been arrested. Investigation has been initiated and further details are awaited,” the statement said.
Officials added that all angles are being examined, including whether the firing was intentional or accidental. The weapon allegedly used in the incident is also being examined as part of the investigation.
The incident created temporary tension at the venue, though normalcy returned shortly after the accused was apprehended. Police said further details would be shared once the investigation progresses and statements of witnesses are recorded.
During preliminary questioning the accused Kamal Singh Jamwal resident of Purani Mandi confessed that he wanted to target the National Conference leader. “I wanted to kill Farooq for the last 20 years. Today I fired at him, but he got saved,” Kamal Singh Jamwal told the police. He further stated that the firearm used in the incident was a licensed gun registered in his name. “Kamal was attending the marriage of his brother’s son”, police said.
Police officials said the statement is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation and further questioning of the accused is underway to ascertain the exact motive and circumstances behind the firing incident.
