SRINAGAR, Mar 12: Members of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), along with parents and students, today held a protest at the Press Enclave here, demanding the withdrawal of an FIR registered against 17 students of Mewar University and their transfer to another recognised university.
Over a dozen protesters assembled at the Press Enclave seeking Government intervention regarding the recognition of their BSc Nursing degrees. They held placards reading, “We demand migration for our children,” “We send our children to study, not to lose their future,” and “We want justice.”

Addressing reporters, JKSA working president Mubashir Ahmed said the association has been in contact with the affected students for the past one-and-a-half years over the problems faced by BSc Nursing students admitted under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS).
Ahmed said the university had earlier assured that the degrees would have legal recognition, but the promise has not been fulfilled. He said the students, currently in the seventh semester, are close to completing their degree without clarity about the validity of their qualification. “The university had given an affidavit assuring that the BSc Nursing programme would remain legally valid. Unfortunately, instead of addressing the issue, the university lodged an FIR against 17 students who were protesting peacefully,” he said.
Ghulam Hassan Khanday, a parent from Pattan, said the students were admitted to the university through a Government scheme and families had trusted that the institution was properly registered. “Our children went there through the scheme with full faith that the college had proper registration. After one year they discovered that the college lacked approval, and now they are facing harassment,” he said.
Israr Rafiz, a student from the 2022 batch, said they realised after reaching the university that the college was not approved by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) or the Rajasthan Nursing Council (RNC). “We protested in the final semester after waiting for years for approval. Instead of resolving the issue, the university called the police and filed an FIR against us,” he said.
The protesters urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Central Government to intervene, cancel the FIR against the students, and ensure their transfer to another recognised university so that their academic future is safeguarded.
