ASI credits Babu Jagat Singh with discovery of Sarnath after fresh research

VARANASI, Mar 13: A significant new fact regarding the historical importance of Sarnath, located in Varanasi, has come to light, overturning previous claims.

Based on new research and evidence, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has officially acknowledged that the historical significance of Sarnath was not discovered by a British official, but rather through excavations commissioned by Babu Jagat Singh-a member of a royal lineage and a local landlord.

This historical correction was announced by Pradeep Narayan Singh, a descendant of Babu Jagat Singh and a representative of the royal family. Concurrently, necessary amendments have also been made to the plaques installed within the Sarnath complex.

Y.S. Rawat, Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, confirmed over the telephone that authentic research has conclusively proven that the initial excavation of Sarnath was conducted by Babu Jagat Singh in the 18th century.

It was following this excavation that the true historical significance of the site was revealed. The department has now inscribed Babu Jagat Singh’s name on the plaques installed at the site, thereby crediting him with the discovery.

Pradeep Narayan Singh-patron of the Babu Jagat Singh Research Committee, guardian of the Jagatganj royal family, and the sixth-generation descendant of Babu Jagat Singh-stated here on Friday that his research team spent a considerable period compiling evidence. He remarked, “Until now, the credit for the discovery of Sarnath was attributed to British officials; however, the ASI has now officially validated the evidence we presented. This marks a major correction in history.”

It is noteworthy that Sarnath is one of the four principal pilgrimage sites associated with the life of Lord Buddha. Following his attainment of enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, Buddha delivered his first sermon to his initial five disciples at this very location-an event known in Buddhist literature as ”Dharma-Chakra-Pravartana” (The Turning of the Wheel of Dharma). Today, Sarnath ranks among the world’s foremost spiritual and tourism destinations.
