JAMMU, Mar 17: The AIIMS Jammu Neurosurgery Department has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing a highly intricate reconstructive surgery on a 15-year-old girl from Pathankot suffering from a rare bony tumour affecting her forehead and eye socket.
Diagnosed with an aneurysmal bone cyst—a benign yet aggressive tumour—the patient had developed facial deformity and progressive vision loss, severely affecting her confidence and even forcing her to stay away from school. The case posed exceptional challenges due to the tumour’s heavy bleeding tendency and its extension into the brain, where it drew partial blood supply from healthy tissue.
The surgery, carried out after weeks of meticulous planning, was led by Dr Kanav Gupta and Dr Shaurya Darbari, Assistant Professors in Neurosurgery, with anaesthesia support from Dr Raksha Kundal, Associate Professor, and Dr Aleesha, Assistant Professor.
Advanced technologies were employed during the procedure, including intraoperative navigation to precisely map tumour extensions around the eye socket. A cell saver system was used to collect, purify, and re-infuse the patient’s own blood, minimizing the need for transfusions.
Following complete tumour removal, surgeons reconstructed the bony defect using a titanium graft. The eyebrow region was carefully restored with a quick-setting polymer bone putty, shaped intraoperatively to match natural contours.
The patient has recovered well and is set for discharge, with restored facial symmetry and vision, marking a life-changing outcome.<Prof (Dr) DN Sharma, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, said that such advanced surgical expertise is now available locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to institutions like AIIMS New Delhi or PGIMER Chandigarh for complex procedures.
