JAMMU, Mar 18: Police here today claimed to have foiled four separate bovine smuggling attempts in different areas by rescuing 37 animals from the clutches of the smugglers. Four vehicles used for the illegal transportation of the animals were also seized.
Officials said that during routine patrolling duty, a team of Police Station Chenani signalled a Bolero Pickup (JK03N-2343) for checking.
The vehicle owner, however, fled from the spot, abandoning his vehicle at a distance, they said.
On checking, officials said, 10 animals transported without permission were found crammed inside the vehicle in a cruel manner.
They were accordingly released and a case FIR number 44/2026 under section 223 BNS, and 11 PCA Act was registered at Police Station Chenani, they said.
Another team of Police Post Roun Domail, while performing the naka checking, rescued 16 animals after the driver of a truck (JK08E-4932) stopped by them fled on seeing the police, leaving his vehicle abandoned.
He was booked in case FIR number 81/2026 under section 223 BNS and 11 PCA Act registered at Police Station Udhampur.
Two bovines were rescued by a team of Police Station Rehmbal when they noticed them loaded inside a car registered in Haryana in a cruel manner.
Officials said after the driver and co-passenger of the car, identified as Zakir Hussain of RS Pura and co-passenger Mohammad Mushtaq of Domail, Katra, failed to produce the documents, they were booked in case FIR number 53/2026 under sections 2233 BNS and 11 PCA Act registered at Police Station Rehmbal.
Meanwhile, during naka checking at Tikri, a vehicle (JK02B-2758) was intercepted for checking.
On inspection, the vehicle was found loaded with 35 bags of onion, beneath which nine bovines were concealed and tied in a cruel manner.
Officials said while the driver of the vehicle, identified as Hassan Din of Kana Chak, Jammu, was arrested, his unidentified co-passenger fled from the spot.
Both were booked in case FIR number 54/2026 under section 223 BNS and 11 PCA Act registered at Police Station Rehmbal, they said.
Meanwhile, further investigation in all the cases is underway.
