NHPC commissions third unit of Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project

JAMMU, Mar 20: NHPC Limited, a ‘Navratna’ Public Sector Undertaking today declared the commercial operation of the third unit (Unit #1 of 250 MW) of its flagship Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project.
The unit commenced commercial operations, adding 250 MW of clean hydropower to the National Grid.
With this milestone, the project has achieved a total operational capacity of 750 MW out of its planned 2000 MW (8×250 MW).
Located on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, the Subansiri Lower Project is one of India’s largest hydroelectric ventures.
The addition of this unit is expected to significantly enhance grid stability, provide crucial peak power support and facilitate better integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid.
Prior to its commercial rollout, the unit had successfully completed its trial run on February 27, 2026, marking a key step forward in the project’s execution.
On the occasion, Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Power and the governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for their continued support.
He also lauded the efforts of the project team led by Rajendra Prasad, along with various departments at NHPC’s Corporate Office.
“The successful commissioning highlights NHPC’s strong technical expertise and execution capabilities, reinforcing its pivotal role in strengthening India’s energy security in line with the government’s vision of a sustainable and self-reliant power sector,”he said and further expressed confidence that the remaining units of the project will be commissioned in a timely manner, paving the way for the project to achieve its full installed capacity of 2000 MW.
