SRINAGAR, Mar 25: The AICC General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir today said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had flagged the potential repercussions of the Iran conflict well before its escalation, alleging that the Centre ignored the warning, remained silent, and offered only”eyewash” instead of preparing alternative strategies to deal with the crisis.
Speaking to reporters in Anantnag, Mir said they had warned a month ago that the consequences of the war would ultimately be borne by the people of India, “Our energy and gas supplies largely come from Iran, and everyone depends on it today. Rahul Gandhi had cautioned that such a crisis cannot be handled quietly and that alternatives must be explored in advance,” Mir said. Click here to watch video
Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mir alleged that the Government failed to respond in time. “The Prime Minister chose to remain silent and the Government offered only an eyewash. Now that they are feeling the heat, they themselves realise Rahul Gandhi was right. That is why an all-party meeting has been called,” he said.
Mir also hinted at possible restrictions in the coming days, suggesting that the situation may resemble a lockdown. “There could be curbs on traffic, petrol and gas usage. Since yesterday morning, escort vehicles have been withdrawn and movement is being restricted. If such measures are being taken at higher levels, it is an indication for the common people. We need to take this situation seriously,” he said.
Referring indirectly to US President Donald Trump, Mir also questioned the timing of the conflict, suggesting it may have been used to divert attention from other issues.
Responding to a question on Pakistan’s role in US-Iran negotiations, Mir said India, as a major country and a traditional friend of Iran, should have asserted a stronger diplomatic role. He criticised the Centre’s approach, alleging that India remained silent despite its historical relationship with Tehran
Meanwhile, Mir called for the immediate conduct of Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that grassroots democratic institutions must be strengthened.
