Goods worth lakhs damaged; family members of shop-owners seek compensation

JAMMU : A major fire broke out at Bagad Mandi near rikuta Nagar on Sunday night, causing damage to over 50 shops and destroying property worth lakhs of rupees.
Fire and Emergency services immediately rushed half a dozen fire tenders to douse the leaping flames in Bagad Mandi at Trikuta Nagar.
An official of the fire and emergency services said the blaze was reported in the market, with mostly make-shift shops made of wood and tin. “The firefighting operation was on till the reports last received and further details are awaited,” he said, adding more fire tenders are being rushed to the scene to control the blaze. The officials said all shops were damaged and there was no report of any casualty. The cause of the fire was not known immediately, they said. Meanwhile, the Police has registered a case and investigations are being conducted to ascertain the cause of fire. The family members of shop-owners have demanded compensation from the administration.
