It is good that now Jammu Airport officials have intensified testing of the unvaccinated travelers including the Vaishno Devi pilgrims in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases in the Union Territory but what is more important is that people coming by trains and other means to the UT should also be screened without any exception. Reportedly, travelers arriving at the airport are allowed to leave only if they’re fully vaccinated, otherwise, each one of them has to go for COVID-19 testing. Besides, all the international travelers are supposed to go for RT-PCR. Another important development in this regard is that the passengers who test positive on arrival are being shifted to DRDO hospital in Jammu. This is a good step as testing is important to control the spread of COVID-19 and thus efforts at Jammu Airport will go a long way in curbing the spread of coronavirus in J&K, which is slowly coming under the grip of this virus as today on 655 fresh COVID cases have been reported in the UT and the infection has snatched away three lives. In this regard, there is much more to accomplish to ensure the safety of the population. One thing is good that the administration has wide ranging experience of controlling the contagion as it has learnt many lessons during the second wave but there is dire need to plug in the gaps especially with regard to people entering the UT through surface transport as well. Still the travelers coming from trains are not being regulated though certain steps have been taken by Kathua administration to check the passengers entering from the Lakhanpur border by ensuring their RAT tests. It is however dicey that the passengers entering the UT in their private vehicles enjoy some kind of insulation and at times sneak into this side without testing for the virus. Unlike the time during the second wave things have not yet been streamlined in the UT but the need of the time is to gear up for the worst scenario as fresh cases are spreading like wildfire and time is so less for countering the virus through effective means.
