Recalling the measures taken by the administration during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic to fight the contagion, the administration in J&K should again chalk out strategy by going through the steps it took earlier which freed the region from the clutches of the disease. Though this time the infection is a bit mild and the need for hospitalization of patients is rare but the way the people are losing life is something which needs to be addressed on priority. As the daily count of fresh cases crossed 4K there is dire need to take extraordinary measures to stop virus spread from breaking all the previous records. The step of imposing weekend lockdown is appreciable but it seems that this will act as perfect panacea against the coronavirus and if the trend of manifold increase in fresh virus cases continues the time is not far when the government will have to consider full time lockdown once again. As the experts in the government has warned that considering the new variant Omicron as normal flue will be a big mistake no one in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir can take a chance. As already the deaths are happening on daily basis there is need to think out of the box and ask the people to become serious over the issue and stop playing with the lives by not following the precautions in letter and spirit. The fact that the Omicron variant is three- four times more virulent than the earlier mutants has already been proved because the pace of spread of virus is extraordinary thus making it necessary to take stringent steps against the transmission of the virus and punishing those who are not serious in adhering to the norms as was the case seen on Saturday when people disobeyed the weekend lockdown with impunity thus making mockery of government order. The alibi which people in Jammu gave was absurd and not at all justified that the order was issued late on Friday night. This kind of attitude towards disease will not be in the interest of any one because the coronavirus is a lethal virus which has a very bad track record of killing people without any mercy. It is therefore advisable for one and all to stop playing with fire and start adhering to the norms without any lethargy.
