CURB CYBER CRIMES

Looking into the alarming rise in cyber crimes, Jammu and Kashmir Police’s endeavour to curb the menace through forming exclusive teams of specially-trained officers is a significant step and will go a long way in mitigating the problem. In this regard, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh has ordered the constitution of teams of well-trained officers for handling cyber-crime investigations in Jammu and Kashmir. Surely this will help in delivering justice to hundreds of people who have been duped by the cyber criminals misusing technology and taking undue benefit of naivety of those who were caught off guard by the online fraudsters. It is now expected that the tardy investigation in the cyber crimes will see a change as the new teams are likely to enthuse efficiency in probing the aforesaid crimes and ensuring justice in a fast track manner. It is pertinent to mention that there is very poor disposal of cyber crime cases in this Union Territory as against a total of 324 cases only 36 were disposed off by the Cyber Cells of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the year 2020. The step taken by the DGP must have been the outcome of the poor performance of the cyber wing as can be gauged for the aforementioned figures. The circular issued in this context has also directed for the provision of observing ‘Cyber Awareness Day’ on the first Wednesday of every month to create awareness on cyber related frauds in all vernacular languages. Cyber crime is a criminal activity that either targets or uses a computer, a computer network or a networked device. Most of the cyber criminals are organized, use advanced techniques and are highly skilled. Some specific examples of the different types of cyber crime are e-mail and internet fraud, identity fraud (where personal information is stolen and used), theft of financial or card payment data, etc. It is likely that the efforts by the police will bear fruits and there will be a drop in cyber crimes with the teams working out the pending cases and imparting awareness among masses.
