Soaring cost of essentials like bread and milk and 2km-long queues for fuel have driven panic-stricken Tamil families to take illegal ferries out of Sri Lanka to India. Sixteen refugees, including eight children, were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard from an islet near Rameswaram and the Dhanushkodi jetty in southern Tamil Nadu.
