Pilots of flights scheduled to reach Kolkata between 5pm and 6.30pm on Friday and again for a half-hour period after 8pm had a trying time as they faced strong crosswinds while descending to land with 11 captains being unable to stabilise the approach in multiple attempts and opting to abort touchdown and pull out full throttle rather than risk being driven off the runway and endanger the lives on board.
