J&K Mountaineering Association releases Calendar of Activities

JAMMU, May 21: Former Home Secretary of India Anil Goswami along with B R Sharma (former Chief Secretary of J&K) and Ashwani Sharma (former MLA) released the Calendar of Activities of Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) for the year 2023-24 in an impressive function held at Press Club, here today.
They were accompanied by Zorawar Singh Jamwal (president), Ram Khajuria (senior vice president), Sumit Khajuria (vice president of Mountaineering Association of J&K), Parveen Sharma (Chairman, Citizens Cooperative Bank), Rahul Sharma (Chairman, Sprawling Buds School, Jammu), Prof Suman Lata of Government College for Women Parade (Jammu), Arti Sharma (Director, Sprawling Buds School), Mridhu Padha (Vice Principal of St Xavier Senior Secondary School) and Rakesh Goswami of Shivalik Mountaineering & Adventure Sports Club and other dignitaries.
Highlighting the activities to be undertaken by the Association and its affiliated clubs, Ram Khajuria mentioned that the highlight of this year’s major activity shall be a prestigious mountaineering expedition to multiple peaks in Ladakh in which the team would attempt five peaks, all above 20,000 ft.
He informed that the Association shall also organize a UT level Sport Climbing Competition for visually challenged climbers at Jammu besides participating in the Zonal/National Sport Climbing Competitions and conducting the UT Championship and 15 district climbing competitions.
While releasing the Calendar of Activities, Anil Goswami stressed that the Association has to explore some ways and means to properly organize its mountaineering expeditions for which sufficient funds are not being provided by the Government.
Ashwani Sharma, while speaking on the occasion, promised all possible help to Shivani, number one climber of the country, for her international training.
Zorawar Singh Jamwal lamented the fact that the Government is not supporting the Association as far as mountaineering expeditions are concerned. However, he promised to hold adventure activities in the far-flung areas of the UT once the infrastructure and the equipment is provided by the J&K Sports Council.
Earlier, Sonam Sidharth, an executive member of the Association, highlighted the achievements of the Association since its inception in 1986.
