1000 officers already being trained by Army

JAMMU, Mar 31: All probationary officers of Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) in the ranks of Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs), Sub Inspectors (SIs) and constables after completion of their training in the Police Training Academies and Centres, will, in future, also be trained in counter-terror operations.

“The batches which have already completed training will be gradually trained in the operations to counter terrorism,” official sources told the Excelsior.
Though the Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel are well trained in taking on terrorists as the Union Territory is facing such a situation for last about three and half decades, the fresh training will be specific course for anti-terror operations of all kinds including hilly areas, forests, hinterland etc.
Jammu and Kashmir Police has been in the forefront in many anti-terror operations.
The latest move, however, comes as Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently stated that the Central Government plans to gradually pull back troops from Jammu and Kashmir and leave law and order to the police force. He also stated that the Government is considering revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
“Not only the upcoming batches but the officers who have already completed their training will also be trained in anti-terror operations batch-wise,” the sources said.
They said nearly 1,000 probationary police officers, including 62 Deputy Superintendents of Police, are already undergoing a six-week long training at the Army’s counter-terror White Knight Corps battle school in Doda district.
The integrated training programme — a first of its kind in the Union Territory grappling with over three decades of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism — commenced on March 19.
According to police, the integrated training programme was aimed at enhancing the coordination and combined operational capabilities of both forces, which for over three decades have combated terrorism side by side.
The training is focussed on operational tactics, intelligence sharing, and counter-terrorism strategies, drawing on the Indian Army’s extensive experience in these fields. This joint training marks a continued commitment to security and the well-being of the region’s residents.
Of those undergoing training, 128 are female officers, including 19 DySPs and 109 Sub-Inspectors.
Such a training, as per the sources, will go a long way to help police independently take on terrorism in different areas of Jammu and Kashmir including twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri. The twin border districts were rocked by a series of terror attacks last year in which 20 bravehearts of the Army sacrificed their lives. However, there has been no major incidents in the two districts so far.
“The valour and sacrifices of both forces in the face of adversity have been instrumental in maintaining national security. The synergy achieved during training will pave the way for the restoration of peace and normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. This will also facilitate the police in emerging as a more potent and well-trained force,” the sources said.
Referring to successful counter-terrorism operations in south Kashmir’s Pulwama and the strategic containment in north Kashmir’s Sopore, considered a transit for infiltrating terrorists, sources said these operations have not only disrupted terror activities but also restored law and order, paving the way for peace and stability.
The operations are also testaments to the collaborative excellence of the Army and police. The integrated training programme is expected to solidify this partnership, leading to even more effective counter-terrorism operations, the sources said.
