Forest encroachments in J&K

The extensive forest land encroachment in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir is not only alarming but also demands immediate and concerted action. With over 19,722 hectares still under encroachment, as disclosed by the Forest, Ecology, and Environment Department to the NGT, it is evident that the issue of illegal occupation of vital ecological reserves requires urgent attention. The gravity of the situation has prompted the NGT to intervene, recognising the nationwide concern regarding forest encroachment. In its recent order, the Tribunal rightly emphasised the substantial environmental implications of such encroachments and directed the involvement of all State and Union Territory authorities. This inclusive approach underscores the need for a unified response to combat this pressing issue, transcending regional boundaries.
However, the response from the concerned authorities, particularly the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) of Jammu and Kashmir, has been marred by delays and incompleteness. The failure to furnish timely and comprehensive reports reflects a lack of urgency in addressing the severity of forest encroachment. Such laxity not only undermines the directives of the NGT but also hampers effective conservation efforts. The Administrative Department intervened to rectify the situation by convening meetings and issuing directives for enhanced field operations. The insistence on detailed reports, including division-wise encroachment particulars and actions taken for eviction, demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability. However, the task ahead demands proactive measures to reclaim and protect forest land from encroachers. The ongoing demarcation of forest areas presents a crucial opportunity to map encroachments simultaneously, streamlining the identification and eviction processes. Time is of the essence in addressing the burgeoning crisis of forest encroachment in Jammu and Kashmir. Failure to safeguard these precious resources not only jeopardises biodiversity but also compromises the well-being of present and future generations.
