On 5-year-old’s PIL, HC says no to liquor shop near school

The Allahabad high court, responding to a PIL by five-year-old LKG student Atharva Dixit, directed the state to refrain from renewing the licence of a liquor shop situated near his school in Kanpur’s Azad Nagar. This decision, made by the bench led by Chief Justice Arun Bhansali and Justice Vikas Budhwar, prevents state excise authorities from renewing the shop’s licence after March 31, 2025, based on the Uttar Pradesh Number and Location of Excise Shop Rules, 1968. Additionally, the petitioner’s counsel, Ashutosh Sharma, argued against the closure of the shop due to the school’s establishment in 2019.
