SRINAGAR, June 3: One of the longest-surviving militants and Lashkar-e-Toiba commander, along with an associate, was killed in an encounter with security forces in the Nihama area of Pulwama district today.
A police official said that a joint team of Police, Army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation last evening based on a specific input about the presence of militants in the village.
He said that as the security forces were conducting searches, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering a gunfight. Click here to watch video
“Despite being given the opportunity to surrender, they declined,” the official said, adding that the exchange of fire lasted for several hours, resulting in the killing of two militants.
He identified the slain as Riyaz Ahmad Dar, a resident of Sethargund Kakapora, who had been active for the last eight years, and Rayees Ahmad of Larve Kakapora, who had been active for three years. Dar was LeT commander and was operating in South Kashmir.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, V K Birdi, termed the killings as a significant development.

He said the encounter, which began on Sunday evening and continued till today afternoon, resulted in the killing of the two militants.
In the meantime, in a joint operation launched by Army and Police on specific intelligence, a specific operation was launched at general area Nagri wherein a naka was also established at Nagri Park by Kupwara police based on specific Input.
“In this joint Operation, one suspected individual Aijaz Ah Parry son of Gulam Ah Parry of Kunan Poshpura was apprehended along with one hand grenade, one pistol with one magazine and four rounds of 9mm ammunition along with other incriminating material.
