KANNAUJ (UP), Jan 11: Twenty-three labourers were injured and few others were feared buried under the debris when the lintel of an under-construction building in Kannauj railway station collapsed in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, police sources said here.
Police sources said a new two-story building is being constructed at the station under the Amrit Bharat Yojana. “The incident took place when the lintel of the building was being laid. The entire section of the lintel collapsed all of a sudden in the afternoon in which more than 40 workers were buried under the debris,” they said.
Police sources said District Magistrate Shubhrant Kumar Shukla along with Superintendent of Police (SP) Binod Kumar, CO City reached the spot and launched a relief and rescue operation.
The DM said that NDRF and SDRF teams had also reached the spot and were engaged in rescue operation.
He said 23 labourers have been rescued so far. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital and Hallet Hospital in Kanpur, he said.
Shukla said that it was a serious incident and that rescuing the labourers was priority. He said that stern action would be taken against those responsible for the incident.
Senior officers have ordered an investigation into the incident. The high-level inquiry committee includes Chief Engineer (Planning and Design), Additional Divisional Railway Manager Izzat Nagar, and Chief Safety Commissioner, Railway Protection Force.
A financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh to seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those having minor injuries has been announced.
Taking cognizance of the incident Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the officials to immediately reach the spot and speed up the relief work.
Earlier, CPRO of Northeast Railway Pankaj Kumar Singh said, “We received information about the incident at 2.39 PM that 5 workers have been injured, and have been sent to the hospital. Railway and state government teams are present at the spot. Relief and rescue work is going on.”
