No traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway to allow weekly maintenance

SRINAGAR, Aug 4: No traffic was allowed on Srinagar-Jammu national highway on Wednesday in view of weekly maintenance of the road.
However, historic 86-km-long Mughal road, seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu highway was open for traffic.
No vehicle was allowed to ply from Srinagar or Jammu today to allow National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to undertake weekly maintenance of the road.
Following frequent closure of the highway due to landslides and shooting stones during winter month, the Union Territory (UT) administration decided to suspend traffic on every Wednesday to allow NHAI to undertake repair and maintenance work.
The highway is the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
He said Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) was allowed to ply on Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region. Jammu bound Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMVs) will ply from Heerpora Shopian today, he added.
The national highway, the only road linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir was also through for one way. Today vehicles will ply from Kargil in Ladakh to Srinagar. (Agencies)
