The ascent of Mallikarjun Kharge, a Dalit, to president of All-India Congress Committee (AICC) has rekindled hope in the rank and file that Congress will bring Scheduled Castes (SCs) back into the party fold and help it pose a political challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP in the 2024 general elections.
