Branded with hot iron to ‘cure’ pneumonia, infant dies in MP

A three-month-old girl from a Baiga family, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PTG), died after being branded multiple times with hot iron in a bizarre ritual to “cure” her pneumonia. Similar incidents have occurred in Shahdol, including the branding of a newborn in February. The infant, Ragini, was taken to the hospital but it was too late. The local administration has launched a campaign to eradicate these harmful practices and is investigating the case.
