Everyone deserves a good oral hygiene. A good oral hygiene is very important for the proper functioning of overall health not just in adults but also in kids. Oral hygiene in kids starts at a very early age. Not just when the first tooth erupts in the oral cavity but even when the child is born since then we have to take care of their oral hygiene. When the child is born he has a horse shoe shaped gum pads and when the child drinks milk, the gum pads of the child has to be cleaned with wet sterile gauze to make sure that his oral cavity is clean and healthy. When the first tooth erupts in the oral cavity parents have to make sure that the tooth needs to be brushed with a clean finger brush with a flouride age appropriate toothpaste . The amount of toothpaste should be of a grain rice sized. Till 3 years of age the amount to toothpaste should be of a grain rice size and after 3 years of age it should be of pea size. Also the child must be frequently taken to the dentist for dental checkups.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry(AAPD) recommends good oral hygiene in kids is essential for their overall health. Poor oral hygiene in kids can lead to caries and cavities in teeth of the kids and can cause pain, infection, poor nutrition and subsequently affecting their systemic health. If the health of child is poor he will not perform well in school. Having a good oral hygiene not only prevent painful cavities, sore gums but also enhances child’s performance in school and academics which boost self confidence in kids.
