Breast cancer develops when cells in the breast begin to grow uncontrollably, forming a lump or mass. While it predominantly affects women, men can also develop breast cancer, though rarely.
When detected early, breast cancer is highly treatable and often curable. Regular check-ups and self-awareness are key. In India, there are many women still present with advanced disease due to lack of awareness, social stigma, or fear, which makes treatment more difficult. According to National Cancer Registry, the incidence has increased from 2,05,424 in 2020 to 2,82,832 in 2025, resulting in 82,429 deaths.
Remember, not every lump is cancer, but it’s always safer to get it checked by a doctor. Your doctor will examine you and advice a mammogram. A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast which can detect cancers
even before symptoms appear. It is done for both diagnosing as well as for screening.
Doctors recommend mammogram for:
* Women above 40: once a year or once in two years
* Women with a family history: Screening may start earlier
Regular screening can reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer by catching it early.
While not all cancers are preventable, some steps can reduce your risk. By maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, limiting alcohol intake, avoiding smoking.
Talking openly about breast health helps remove the stigma. Encourage your mother, sister, friend, or colleague to go for regular check-ups. Awareness is not just for patients — it’s for families, workplaces, and communities.
A Message of Hope
With modern advances in surgery, radiotherapy, and targeted medicines, breast cancer outcomes are better than ever. Many survivors go on to live long, healthy lives. The key lies in early diagnosis and timely treatment.
Schedule your screening, and spread the word. Because awareness today can save a life tomorrow.
