Soibugh, Budgam, Nov 6: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Agha Syed Mohsin today expressed strong confidence in his party’s victory in the upcoming Budgam bypolls, asserting that “the people of Budgam are ready for change” after decades of neglect under the National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In an exclusive interview with Excelsior on the sidelines of a campaign rally in Soibugh, Budgam, Mohsin, one of the 17 candidates contesting the November 11 by-election, said the BJP is gaining unprecedented support in the region, marking a new chapter in Budgam’s political history.
“Today, we held a meeting at Soibugh booth number 44. Similar meetings are being held at every booth. The new Budgam will not be the same Budgam that people have seen for decades,” Mohsin said.
He added that the BJP’s growing acceptance was visible in the crowd attending rallies and meetings. “See how many people are raising the BJP flag, how many call us to their villages. We are confident there will be no competition this time,” he said.
This marks the first time a BJP candidate is contesting from Budgam. Mohsin said he decided to run because of the positive impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s welfare schemes. “People remember what the BJP has given compared to what the NC and PDP have done. The poor have benefited from the schemes, and they will vote for us this time,” he said.
Taking aim at the National Conference, Mohsin accused Omar Abdullah of betraying the people of Budgam. “He took votes from Budgam in 2024 and then left for Ganderbal. He has never visited Budgam since. They announced their candidate at the last hour because they know they will lose. For 50 years, they have done nothing for this constituency,” he said.
He also criticised the NC’s unfulfilled promises, saying, “They had promised 12 gas cylinders, 200 units of electricity, and an increase in ration from 5 kg to 10 kg. All those announcements failed.”
Responding to Chief Minister’s claim that the absence of statehood has limited development in Jammu and Kashmir, Mohsin said, “he has 30 cars behind him, raised salaries of his MLAs and appointed advisors, yet he did not provide jobs or fix roads and schools. The people know the truth.”
